Each year the College offers a number of Visiting Fellowships to men and women who intend to engage in study and research in Oxford and are prepared to participate in the academic life of the College. There is no limitation upon the field of study. A Visiting Fellow may be elected for a period of one, two or three terms within the Oxford academic year. For each term, there are normally nine Visiting Fellowships available. The provisional dates of 'Full Terms' at Oxford for 2010-2011 are:
Michaelmas Term (from Sunday, 10 October to Saturday, 4 December, 2010)
Hilary Term (from Sunday, 16 January to Saturday, 12 March, 2011)
Trinity Term (from Sunday, 1 May to Saturday, 25 June, 2011)
Most Visiting Fellows are persons holding university posts, but the College welcomes applications from others who wish to carry out scholarly work in Oxford. Visiting Fellowships are not normally offered to candidates who before the end of their tenure of the fellowship would have reached the retirement age in force for academic fellows of the College. Visiting Fellows enjoy nearly all the rights of ordinary Fellows (including lunches and dinners without charge), but are not members of the governing body of the College. The College provides without charge a study in College and fully-furnished residential accommodation in Oxford, including some flats for families. Studies and residential accommodation are available to Visiting Fellows between 15 September and 30 June, including vacations. Studies are not available outside these dates, but applications to rent summer accommodation for a period contiguous with a term may be considered; it is necessary to apply early.
The College has to choose every year from among a large number of well-qualified applicants, in widely varied fields of study. In making this choice, we give weight to intellectual quality, to the interest and feasibility of the research project, and to the benefit of carrying it out in Oxford. We therefore ask applicants to include with their application form a full statement, of not more than 1000 words, of the scholarly project they would pursue during their tenure of a Visiting Fellowship, and of the benefit of carrying it out in Oxford.
In exceptional circumstances, the College may also offer limited financial help. Any candidates desiring to take advantage of this provision should indicate this at the time of application. You should send your completed application by 4 September 2009. You should send a copy of the enclosed memorandum to each of your referees. The College relies upon applicants to ensure that their referees write direct and by the 11 September 2009 at the latest, and cannot itself undertake to approach referees. All correspondence should be addressed to Mrs Julie Edwards, Secretary to the Dean of Visiting Fellows, All Souls College, Oxford OX1 4AL (julie.edwards@all-souls.ox.ac.uk). Candidates may expect to hear the outcome of their application before the end of November.
It would also be appreciated if applicants would complete and submit with their application the recruitment monitoring form available under General Information for Applicants.
