Senior Research Fellowships 2012

All Souls College proposes to elect three Senior Research Fellows with effect from 1 October 2012 (or an agreed later date): in 'History (after 500 AD)', 'Literature in European Languages including English (after 500 AD)', and 'Philosophy (including Ancient Philosophy)', (all subjects broadly conceived).

A Senior Research Fellowship is of comparable academic standing to a Professorship in the University of Oxford. Applicants are expected to have a correspondingly distinguished record of achievement in research.

Terms of Fellowship

The primary duty of a Senior Research Fellow is to pursue a programme of advanced study and research in Oxford, approved by the College. Senior Research Fellows are members of the Governing Body of the College. As such, they are expected to attend and participate in all College meetings and may be asked to serve on College committees, to assist with the annual Prize Fellowship examination and, for a limited period, to hold a part-time College office. Leave of absence is granted on the recommendation of the College's Academic Purposes Committee. This allows Fellows to work away from Oxford for up to one term in six, when this would be beneficial to their programme of research. In exceptional circumstances, the College will entertain applications for further leave, but of no more than three consecutive terms. Senior Research Fellows may take on other commitments, subject to discharging the obligations of their Fellowship.

The College provides the Fellowships to support programmes of research and it requires Fellows to report to its Academic Purposes Committee every two years on their progress. The College does not regard Senior Research Fellows as bound indissolubly to the particular programmes they have proposed and may permit Fellows to vary them. Senior Research Fellowships are subject to renewal by the College every seven years. The College will renew the Fellowship on evidence of satisfactory achievement and on presentation of a satisfactory programme of research for the following seven years (or until retirement).

The retirement age for Senior Research Fellows is 67.

Remuneration, Allowances, and Entitlements

The annual stipend (reviewed each August) of Senior Research Fellows on Scale A (see below), and including housing allowance (see also below) is linked to a point on the Oxford University professorial salary scale and is currently £89,397. To qualify for payment on Scale A in any academic year, a Fellow must undertake to give not fewer than sixteen lectures or classes in the University in that year. Otherwise the stipend is on Scale B, which is £7,512 less. These stipends are paid on the basis that the Fellow is engaged full-time on the research for which the Fellow was elected. Should a Fellow receive remuneration from other sources the College may adjust his or her stipend accordingly. Senior Research Fellows belong to the USS (Universities Superannuation Scheme) final salary pension scheme.

A housing allowance (of £5,937) is included in salary provided the Fellow lives out of College but within 25 miles of the College and does not receive housing allowance from any other source. In some circumstances the College may be able to help with partial housing finance. Alternatively, the College may be able to offer free residential accommodation in the College or one of its annexes, but if so no housing allowance will be paid. In appropriate cases, it will also contribute towards re-location costs on similar terms to those offered in relation to University appointments.

Studies in College are connected to the University IT network, and the College assists with the purchasing of computing equipment. The College provides an academic allowance of up to £3,103 to cover research expenses, and Fellows can apply for additional grants. The College also provides a study, and lunch and dinner at common table, without charge. Fellows can join the College health insurance scheme (a taxable benefit).

The Domestic Bursar will be available to discuss the financial implications of a Fellowship at the College with interested candidates.

Applications

Potential candidates should make applications on-line by Friday, 23 September 2011. Candidates will be required to submit:

Candidates are also asked to complete the recruitment monitoring form. Applicants from outside the European Economic Area will also need to be able to meet UK immigration requirements. The College (via the University) will act as a sponsoring employer if necessary.

The College reserves the right to obtain further references about candidates and will tell candidates if they are on the final short-list during the week beginning Monday 23 January 2012, and will invite short-listed candidates to dine in College on Saturday 11 or on Saturday 18 February. Short-listed candidates will also be invited to the College the Friday before they are invited to dinner to meet the Warden and to meet with small groups of interested Fellows to talk informally about their work. Appointment is by the election of the Warden and Fellows of All Souls as a whole. The election day is Saturday 25 February, and the Warden will publish the result that day.

The College will not elect to all, or any, of the Fellowships unless it believes that there are enough suitable candidates to fill the vacancies. The College may also take the initiative in seeking out candidates whom it thinks suitable.

All inquiries to the College Secretary.
